Sewing 1939

Materials: Video
Dimensions: Variable
A still from an animation that shows an image of a found antique photographic negative with a video inserted over part of the still image. The video shows the needle going up and down and the fabric which is being sewn gradually folds out of the frame of the negative. This is one in a series of animated elements of antique photographs of women doing crafts exploring the authentication of my choice of a crafts career.

The woman sewing captured in the act of her craft provides a physical connection to its moment of creation and is a reminder of the pace of time. Its age has an authenticity that the manipulated images of now can not provide. I desire access to the photo’s story and explore the seduction and impossibility of accessing the truth of the past through its attempted animation.
